Astrodyne Adds DC/DC Converters For Harsh Settings

Astrodyne has expanded its line of DC/DC converters to include RO Associates' high-density Microverter Series, suitable for use in military, industrial and other harsh environments. The series ranges from 200W to 300W and is available in 3/4 brick. The Microverter Series features -40C to +100C operation (-55C optional), current sharing, remote sense, a switching frequency synch option and a trimmable output for rugged and extreme applications. It includes the 2nd Generation Series (UV-164) available with higher power and efficiency; the same pin-out, drop-in; and an identical trim function.

The Microverter Series is available with full SnPb (no pure tin), SnPb solder (5/6 RoHS) or lead-free RoHS options. Construction features driving the new UV-164 series include automated assembly, low capacitance, insulated metal substrate technology and the company's fourth-generation planar transformer technology. RO products are deployed on airborne-, shipboard- and land-vehicle applications, as well as in a variety of industrial and medical products.

FUSE SIZING CONSIDERATIONS FOR HIGHER EFFICIENCY MOTORS

When selecting the proper fuse for short circuit protection in motor starting applications, it is important to not only ensure that the fuse will not nuisance open during motor start up times, but also that the fuse will coordinate as required with overload relays. When sizing fuses between 125% and 150% of the motor nameplate current, several advantages, including ease of coordination with an overload device, a smaller disconnect, and increased short circuit protection from a lower fuse rating, can be achieved.
