Infrared LED Can Improve Vision System Operation

Osram Opto Semiconductors offers the Dragon SFH 4236 LED for applications such as driver and passenger monitoring systems, blind-spot detection systems and camera-based vision systems. The infrared (IR) Dragon SFH 4236 LED is designed for applications that require narrow radiation characteristics from limited board space. Osram said that its SFH 4232 IR LED achieves a typical radiant intensity of 650mW/sr at a DC current of 1A, more than three times that of the standard IR Dragon.

The device emits at a wavelength of 850nm and is a compromise between maximum spectral sensitivity for CCD and CMOS cameras and suppressed visibility for the human eye. 'Designed with automotive applications in mind, the total height of the SFH 4236 is about 35 per cent smaller compared to conventional Dragon solutions with an external lens,' said Sevugan Nagappan, marketing manager infrared devices at Osram Opto Semiconductors. The integrated lens of the SFH 4236 concentrates the emitted infrared light within a viewing angle of +/-20deg, eliminating the need for a complex, expensive external lens assembly.

The footprint is identical to that of the other IR Dragon devices and the SFH 4236 can be used as a drop-in replacement in existing designs. It exhibits the same electrical parameters as the standard IR Dragon and is suitable for reflow soldering. The 850nm IR Dragon range consists of the standard version SFH 4232, the stack version SFH 4235 with twice the total radiant flux and the SFH 4236 with integrated lens.
