Linear Technology Launches DC/DC Regulator System

Linear Technology, a provider of analogue and mixed signal integrated circuits, has introduced the LTM4614, a dual DC/DC uModule regulator system including inductors in a surface-mount package. The LTM4614 can regulate either two voltages from 0.8V to 5V at up to 4A each or one output voltage at up to 8A by sharing current from both outputs. The LTM4614 has the ability to operate from two different supply rails ranging from 2.375V to 5.5V (6V maximum) or from one input supply by trying the input pins together.

This complete DC/DC system includes all the elements needed for a dual point-of-load regulator, including inductors, capacitors, DC/DC controller, compensation circuitry and power switches. All are encapsulated and protected within a plastic surface mount LGA (land grid array) package. The package dimensions are 15 x 15mm with only 2.8mm of height, providing a low-profile point-of-load regulator that allows smooth air flow for cooling in densely populated circuit boards, providing a simple solution for powering FPGA and ASIC cores and I/O.

Linear Technology said the LTM4614 is guaranteed to have only +/- 1.5 per cent total DC output error, which includes errors from the reference voltage as well as line and load regulation. A current mode device with high switching frequency, the LTM4614 has fast transient response to line and load changes while operating with high stability with a variety of output capacitors. The efficiency is nominal (91 per cent) and up to 94 per cent depending on the voltage and current conditions. The device supports output voltage tracking and safety features including overvoltage and overcurrent protection as well as thermal shutdown. The LTM4614 has an internal operating temperature range from -40C to 125C. The device is RoHS compliant with the ability to be soldered with Pb-free (lead-free) and Pb-based solder during board assembly.
