Modular Vision Devices For Tough Inspection Tasks

Cognex has introduced Advantage Image Engines, a range of programmable vision devices for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), suitable for challenging inspection applications. The Advantage Image Engines range is claimed to offer excellent 1D barcode and 2D Data Matrix code reading and includes a full suite of Cognex vision tools. The vision devices can be integrated into commercial and industrial equipment.

The devices feature a modular design that provides a good level of user control over lighting, communication and optics. According to David Gantt, vice-president of sales for OEM Vision Engines, the new code-reading devices offer vision and enable OEMs to detect defects, locate features and analyse parts. The Advantage Image Engines range uses the same code-reading algorithms as those found in Cognex industrial ID readers. The company's decoding software enables the fast reading of 1D and 2D codes on almost any surface at any speed, including difficult-to-read codes caused by low contrast, scratches and voids or reflections.

Cognex also offers a library of industrial-grade vision tools. High-accuracy Patmax object location software provides part and feature location, ensuring reliability and repeatability under challenging conditions, according to the company. Three product configuration options are available: engine only, engine plus interface board and engine encased in housing. A modular lens design provides a choice of optics to accommodate varying working distances and field-of-view requirements.

The Advantage Image Engines range of OEM image engines offers the ability to power and control external lighting. All of the vision devices feature built-in Ethernet with industrial protocols to facilitate the communication of data and images (USB and RS232 are also supported). OEMs are able to design and configure their applications using Cognex Dataman setup tools, In-Sight setup tools or a C++ programming library.
