Modules Provide Remote-Control Switch Function

Radiometrix has launched a transmitter/receiver pair that is suitable for lighting control, security/fire/lone-working alarms, machine-stop systems and industrial-quality on/off switching mechanisms. The CXT/CXR module range provides a complete remote-control switch function in a module format, delivering long-range operation in situations where existing wideband solutions cannot offer adequate range or where band congestion requires multiple-channel operation.

Thanks to the inclusion of single-function controllers/actuators, the CXT and CXR modules are suitable for tasks that just call for a simple on/off control function (such as floodlight control and machine override shutdown), without the need for any additional external circuitry (such as a microprocessor or a dedicated encoder/decoder IC). This minimises the size, bill-of-materials cost and software overhead associated with system designs that employ these modules.

Supporting data rates of up to 5Kbps, the modules are built on the radio hardware of the company's LM series. As with the LM series, they provide 32 frequency channel operation (12.5KHz or 25kHz channels) in any of the 173.200MHz to 173.325MHz (UK), 150.825MHz to 152.450MHz (Australia), 433.875MHz to 434.650MHz (European Union) or 458.525MHz to 459.1MHz (UK) frequency bands, as well as other custom VHF bands on request, allowing them to meet the radio-frequency (RF) requirements of many geographical regions.

The CXR receiver has a -118dBm or more usable calling sensitivity, while drawing only 20mA from a 3.1-15V rail. The matching CXT transmitter can be offered in 10mW (35mA from 3.1-15 V) or 100mW (95mA from 4.1-15 V) versions, depending on specific band regulations. The integrated control coder/decoder uses a highly noise-tolerant biphase coded data stream, including preamble/framing sequences, CRC error detection to minimise false activations and a 16-bit user-programmable address. All operating parameters (channel, address and frequency table setup) can be programmed by the user via a simple serial interface.

Together, these features give the user a reliable remote actuator with an operating range of up to 1km, according to Radiometrix. The CXT and CXR come in compact shielded housings, measuring 33 x 23 x 9mm and 46 x 23 x 9mm respectively, with pins for mounting onto printed circuit boards. The modules have an operating temperature range of -20C to +55C and conform fully with EN 300 220-3 and EN 301 489-3 standards. Class one (to EN300-220-v2.3.1) receiver versions are also available.
