Waterproof Detector Switches Go Automotive

With the SPVQ7 series, Alps Electric offers waterproof detector switches for automotive applications. The horizontally actuated switches' dimensions are 14.7 (w) x 5.4 (d) x 6.7mm (h) its operating life is around 300,000 switching cycles. Conceived as one-pole two-position or one-pole one-position switches, the SPVQ7 series is rated for switching currents of maximal 0.1A at 12V DC or 50A at 5VDC respectively. The necessary operating force accounts for 1+/-0.5N. The detector switches are available with left- and right-side boss.

Depending on the version, they can be mounted directly on a circuit board or are equipped with solder terminals. Operating temperatures range from -40 to 85C. The other specifications include a maximum initial contact resistance of 500Mohm, an insulation resistance higher than 100Mohm at 500V and a voltage proof of up to 500V AC for 1min. The SPVQ7 series is suitable for lead-free reflow soldering and meets the RoHS (Restriction on Hazardous Substances) directives.

When selecting the proper fuse for short circuit protection in motor starting applications, it is important to not only ensure that the fuse will not nuisance open during motor start up times, but also that the fuse will coordinate as required with overload relays. When sizing fuses between 125% and 150% of the motor nameplate current, several advantages, including ease of coordination with an overload device, a smaller disconnect, and increased short circuit protection from a lower fuse rating, can be achieved.
