Weld Purge Monitors Reduce Costs In Power Plant

Argweld weld purge monitors from Huntingdon Fusion Techniques (HFT) are said to save time and costs in power plant pipe welding operations. Staff at HFT have been given access to an exchange of observations by senior engineers involved in the maintenance of power-generating plant in South Africa. This is paraphrased: 'Currently, the purging of pipes during the welding process is controlled by guessing the correct amount of gas in a pipe.

'To be on the safe side, therefore, the purging is done longer than necessary just to make sure. 'However, should there be a problem such as gas leakage we do not have a way to determine that there is a problem with the purging gas quality inside the pipe. 'This may cause a weld failure. 'One large bore weld failure costs us in excess of GBP5000. 'Therefore, one failure will pay for many of these instruments.

'These instruments will also reduce overall welding time because welding can commence once the oxygen level has been reached and we do not have to wait extended times to "make sure" that purging is adequate. 'The weld purge monitor is a device that we can use in the welding department on all sites to save time and inert gas. 'It will prevent root failures during welding of the X20CrMoV121 material especially on large bore pipes.
