MRandP Extends Operating Life Of Sight Gauges

Minnesota Rubber and Plastic has converted a complex, three-piece assembly into a single-moulded part of high-performance plastic to increase operating life and lower costs of a radiator sight gauge. Custom moulded by Minnesota Rubber and Plastic (MRandP), these new sight gauges have operating advantages over the previous design. On the radiator, the sight gauges show coolant level without having to uncap and check the level or use a dipstick.

With a threaded base, the single component gauge locks tightly into position and is less prone to leakage. With good mechanical properties, the gauge has high heat resistance to 356F and material stability ensuring operating life up to 20 years. This precision moulding of high-performance Polyetherimide (PEI) by MRandP has improved design function and cost efficiency. PEI sight gauges and similar components are said to have excellent hydrolytic and UV stability as well as radiation resistance.

PEI is extremely well suited for repeated hot air, steam and cold chemical exposure. It is flame retardant and can be used for long periods at continuous temperatures up to 356F. This sight gauge design conversion, from a three-piece assembly into a single-moulded part, is a typical example of MRandP's design services. These are offered to further advance customer design and manufacturing programs.

The MRandP design services include: preliminary engineering assistance and mechanical design review, and materials engineering including research and development into a full range of high-performance plastics. MRandP also provides rapid mould design and development, FEA analysis, prototype services, process engineering, injection, compression transfer and liquid silicone rubber moulding including metal-to-plastic conversions.
