Cool-Phos Solvent Provides Eco-Friendly Cleaning

Cool-Phos from Croftshaw Solvents is a low-temperature dynamic cleaning and phosphating process that is claimed to create a very clean surface at low environmental cost. The process creates a layer of pure phosphate on the surface of the component, which improves the adhesion of subsequent coatings and provides a good mechanical bond between the paint film and the metal. The Cool-Phos process is similar to that used in regular vapour degreasing, with a couple of additional stages, and involves immersion in the boiling Cool-Phos solvent followed by spray rinsing with clean distilled solvent.

As Cool-Phos has a boiling point of 38C, energy consumption is low, according to the company. The liquid is stable, biodegradeable and non-flammable. It is ozone friendly and has no greenhouse-gas potential. In addition, it does not contribute to low-level atmospheric ozone. Cool-Phos plant can be fabricated by any plant manufacturer, and full support and back-up is provided by Stowlin Croftshaw. Only one process tank is required, with no secondary drying oven, so plant costs are also low. Operator training is included in the cost of Cool-Phos, and regular site visits by the company's technical service engineers and regular laboratory analysis are provided.

One-site quality control is said to be straightforward. The Cool-Phos process may be applied to many metals, although mild steel, aluminium and zinc are the most commonly treated. The process gives these metals a surface etch for a deep clean. The one-dip, four-stage, non-aqueous process usually takes around four to eight minutes, leaving treated parts cool and dry. The main ingredient of Cool-Phos is dichloromethane, along with phosphoric acid and other solvents. The phosphate layer deposited by Cool-Phos protects the metal from moisture, which means that no additional protection is necessary during subsequent storage.
