Delphi Automotive Technologies at Motor Show

Delphi Automotive is supplying its technologies, including diesel systems, active safety technology and connection systems, to a number of vehicles introduced at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. The company's Multimode Electronically Scanning Radar (ESR) is a solid-state radar that provides two measurement modes simultaneously and makes it possible to use a single radar to enable driver-assist systems that previously required multiple radars.

Delphi said that ESR is helping make radar-based convenience and safety systems affordable in the volume automotive market. The technology is featured on the new Ford Focus and Volvo V60 station wagon plug-in hybrid. Delphi's Multec Diesel Common Rail System, a robust, cost-effective modular diesel fuel-injection system, is featured on vehicles at the show including the Chevrolet Cruze, Kia Picanto, Kia Rio, Mercedes-Benz C Coupe, Opel Antara and Peugeot 308 e-HDI.

With its smart balanced valve solenoid injector design, the system is said to be fast and has injection performances similar to servo-piezo technologies. Its control strategies enable the system to deliver precise fuel quantities over the life of the vehicle and provide optimal emissions control and acoustic performance. Other green technologies include Delphi's energy-efficient and high-performance heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, which are said to increase vehicle fuel economy without sacrificing passenger comfort.

Delphi designed the HVAC module for several Ferrari models. Delphi's Compact Variable Compressors feature an energy-saving six or seven piston continuously variable mechanism allied to the A/C system's control software, which also allows for optimised fuel efficiency and engine power availability. Delphi also develops electrical/electronic architectures using its Velocity Tool Suite. These architectures are said to streamline the development process, offer cost-competitive solutions and improve engineering efficiency and quality.

They are also said to help OEMs reduce mass, minimise system complexity and overcome packaging challenges. Delphi is supplying numerous vehicles with complete wiring assemblies, including the Mercedes-Benz C Coupe and the Saab 9-5 station wagon. The company's hybrid and electric vehicle technologies are said to be helping manufacturers increase fuel economy, reduce emissions, and enhance safety with products designed to provide peak performance, resolve packaging challenges and lower cost.

Delphi recently launched sound generators that will help warn pedestrians of oncoming hybrid and electric vehicles. Designed to comply with legislation expected to mandate minimal sound for both hybrid and electric vehicles, the environmentally friendly sounders are robust, compact and lightweight. Delphi's first vehicle sound generator will be introduced by a European OEM in mid 2012. Delphi also offers both portable and stationary charging systems and components.
