Heraeus Emitters Help to Improve Flooring Quality

Carbon infrared (CIR) emitters from Heraeus Noblelight are helping Polyflor to improve the quality of its flooring products. The emitters are also enabling the Manchester-based company to improve dimensional stability during the embossing of its range of heavy-duty homogenous floor coverings. Over the past decade, Polyflor has invested more than GBP20m in plant and equipment to expand its product portfolio, which includes its heavy-duty homogenous range for use in schools, hospitals and commercial organisations.

The company recently decided to investigate its embossing process, which had previously used short-wave infrared units to soften the 2m-wide PVC web before embossing it with decorative patterns. However, the short-wave process proved very colour selective and geometric integrity was sometimes affected during heating. In an effort to solve this problem, Polyflor approached Heraeus, which then carried out extensive trials at its Neston Application Centre. These showed that medium-wave infrared would ensure better drying results during embossing and a CIR system was subsequently installed at Polyflor.

When selecting the proper fuse for short circuit protection in motor starting applications, it is important to not only ensure that the fuse will not nuisance open during motor start up times, but also that the fuse will coordinate as required with overload relays.
