Machining Centre Suitable for Brittle Materials

DMU has introduced the DMU 85 monoblock, a new five-axis vertical machining centre that provides a spacious working envelope of 850 x 850 x 650mm in a small footprint of 11.6m2. The machine has flexible expansion options. For three-axis machining, a fixed table accommodates workpieces up to 1,200mm long and weighing 2,000kg. For five-axis machining, a trunnion-mounted rotary table may be specified, driven from either one side or both.

The SK40 / HSK-A63 spindle is rated at 13kW /10,000rpm /83Nm as standard, but is available with power/speed/torque from 19kW /14,000rpm /100Nm to 24kW /24,000rpm /100Nm or 46kW /10,000rpm /200Nm. Alternatively, in conjunction with an optional SK50 / HSK-A100 toolholder, the machine can be fitted with a 44kW /10,000rpm /288Nm spindle for heavy roughing. Modularity extends to the tool magazine, which can have 30, 60 or 90 pockets. The control panel can be swivelled adjacent to the tool-loading station during setup. Chip-to-chip time is 4.9 seconds.

High productivity is further promoted by 6m/s acceleration to 40m/min rapids in X, Y and Z, with linear scale feedback. Design details include a steeply slanted, stainless-steel work area for unhindered chip flow and a wide central conveyor to ensure fast chip removal to the rear of the machine. Another highlight is the green-to-red monitor on the front of the spindle, which allows the operator to assess the level of process stability. There is a special production package with an internal 40 bar coolant supply, as well as a space-saving chip conveyor on the rear of the machine, which minimises the amount of space required on the shop floor.

The DMG Ergoline control with 19in screen comes with the option to choose either Siemens Sinumerik 840D solutionline or Heidenhain iTNC 530. The DMU 85 monoblock offers more flexibility than other five-axis machining centres. For example, it includes turning-milling technology, as well as the options of laser machining and ultrasound-driven machining of hard or brittle materials. These features will be available before EMO 2011.
