Regulators Suit High-Power Industrial Applications

ON Semiconductor has introduced three new wide-input voltage, low-dropout (LDO) Linear Voltage Regulators, for applications such as entertainment systems and lithium-ion coin-cell-powered equipment. Additions to the NCP58x range are Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) devices that deliver benefits such as reduced power consumption, improved noise performance and a wide choice of small form-factor packages. The first of the new ranges comprises the 50mA and 150mA NCP4640 and NCP4641 products.

These devices have a wide input voltage range of 4-36V and a maximum input voltage tolerance of 50V. A low quiescent current of 9uA helps reduce power consumption when the devices are idle. Both are offered as standard in a SOT-89-5 package, with a SOIC-6-TL power package available on request. The NCP4629 is a 500mA LDO Linear Voltage Regulator with an input voltage range of 4-24V and a maximum input tolerance of 36V. An Enable pin allows the device to be placed in a power-saving standby mode, while a wide operating temperature range (-40 to +105C) makes the NCP4629 suitable for high-power industrial applications.

It comes in a thermally efficient DPAK-5 package. At the lower end of the input voltage range, ON Semiconductor has introduced the 150mA NCP4620 and the NCP4625, which can drive more than 300mA. Both have excellent ripple-rejection characteristics and low quiescent-current values. An input voltage range of 2.6-10V makes them suitable for applications in products powered by two lithium ion cells.

The NCP4620 and NCP4625 are available in a choice of SC-70-5 and SOT-23-5 packages. There are four additions to the NCP58x range. The 150mA NCP4586 is available in a choice of three packages, including UDFN. The 150mA NCP4587 and the 300mA NCP4589 switch to a low-power mode under light current loads and automatically switch back to a fast response mode as the output load increases to more than 3mA. Designers can choose from a number of package styles, one of which is the ultra-thin XDFN that is 0.4mm in height.

The final new LDO linear voltage regulator is the 200mA NCP4588, which is a new addition to ON Semiconductor's NOCAP portfolio. This device gives stable operation without the need for an output capacitor; this helps reduce the overall component count of a design, save valuable PCB real estate, and contributes to a more robust solution for hostile environments. This device is also available in the XDFN package. ON Semiconductor's new LDO linear voltage regulator devices are priced between USD0.25 and USD0.60 (GBP0.16 and GBP0.37) per unit.
