Superspeed USB 3.0 Bridge Controller

Saelig has introduced the PL2771, a single-chip Superspeed USB 3.0 to SATAII-compliant bridge controller that is suitable for applications such as portable media players and SATA port multipliers. Superspeed USB 3.0(5Gb/s) delivers ten times the performance of Hi-Speed USB 2.0(480Mb/s) while offering compatibility with all USB-enabled PCs and peripheral devices, as it is fully backward compatible to all USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 hosts.

The PL2771 can operate under Superspeed, Hi-Speed and Full-Speed USB connections. It also contains an internal embedded high performance eight-bit microcontroller that can be used to support versatile system applications such as one-button backup, power control and other features for USB connection. The PL2771 is implemented with a USB Mass Storage Class driver and the latest UASP driver. Packaged as a 48-pin QFN or 64-pin LQFP device, the PL2771 uses a 30MHz reference clock and is hot-plug Serial ATA Rev.2.6 compliant.

Its ultra-low power internal core is designed in 0.13um silicon and runs on 1.2V to keep power consumption to a minimum, although I/O lines operate at 3.3V. Twelve multi-function general purpose I/O (GPIO) pins can be programmed for USB-speed LED, button inputs or other special functions using the available software development kit. Onboard firmware can be upgraded through the USB interface. PL2771 also supports a PWM interface and a generic SPI/I2C master/slave interface.

The PL2771's internal data buffer optimises downstream and upstream data-transfer performance, and supports greater than 2-terabyte/4KB-sector hard drives with USB3.0/USB2.0/SATA power saving management. Target applications include USB 3.0 external HDD/SSD/ODD, portable media players, SATA port multipliers and so on. A demonstration board is available for development purposes. PL2771 is manufactured by Prolific Technology , a Taiwan IC design house, and is available now from its US distributor Saelig at less than $10 (?6.14) for a 2,000 quantity.
