SiTime’s Stratum 3 Compliant MEMS Oscillators Set New Standards in Package Size, Power Consumption And Reliability

MSC now offers the ultra-compact, high-precision SiT5301 and SiT5302 Stratum 3 compliant silicon MEMS oscillators from SiTime. These oscillators are ideally suited for use in demanding telecommunications and network technology applications such as SONET, synchronous Ethernet-based core and edge routers, wireless base stations as well as IP timing and intelligent smart grid applications.

With the first two devices of the new SiT530x product family – the SiT5301 covers the lower frequency range from 1 MHz to 60 MHz and the SiT5302 covers the higher frequency range from 60 MHz to 220 MHz – SiTime once again sets new standards in package size, performance, features and reliability. The oscillators, which are also offered in a 2520 compatible package, are by far the world’s smallest ±100 ppb oscillators – 60 percent smaller than conventional Stratum 3 TCXOs and 10 times smaller than a traditional quartz crystal-based OCXO. If required, the two high-precision oscillators are also available in 3225, 5032 and 7050 packages.

A frequency, which is programmable with up to 6 decimal places of accuracy, and an enhanced voltage-controlled pull range of up to ±12.5 ppm for in-system calibration and fine tuning provide the highest level of frequency accuracy with both the SiT5301 and SiT5302.

Furthermore, in contrast to quartz crystal-based products, the MEMS-based SiT530x oscillators do not require "activity dips". This results in a higher frequency stability and improved system performance over the entire operating temperature range. With ±0.1 ppm frequency stability in the commercial temperature range from 0°C to +70°C, holdover stability of at least  ±0.37 ppm/24 hours, a guaranteed frequency stability of ±4.6 ppm/20 years and 500 femtoseconds typical of integrated RMS phase jitter in the range 12 kHz to 20 MHz, the Telcordia GR-1244 Stratum 3 frequency stability specifications for timing applications are not only completely fulfilled, but also in some respects even exceeded.

The wide operating voltage range from 2.5 to 3.3 V eliminates possible level changes and supports all common telecommunications and network SoCs, ASICs as well as FPGAs, the SoftEdgeTM configurable rise/fall time improves the impedance matching of signal lines and reduces electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Another outstanding feature of the SiT5301 and SiT5302 Stratum 3 compliant silicon MEMS oscillators is their high reliability. With 50,000 g shock resistance, 70 g vibration resistance and a mean time between failures (MTBF) of 500 million hours, the products of the new SiT530x product family perform 10 times better than comparable quartz crystal-based TCXOs and OCXOs.

As with all MEMS-based products from SiTime, the SiT5301 and SiT5302 Stratum 3 compliant silicon MEMS oscillators feature very short lead times. Availability of samples is planned for December 2011 and start of production is scheduled for the first half of the year 2012.
