Online map of the Industrie 4.0 platform

During the National IT Summit, which took place on November 18 and 19, 2015 in Berlin, German Federal Minister Sigmar Gabriel, along with the other management members of the Industrie 4.0 platform, presented the “Industrie 4.0” online map.

This lists around 200 application examples and test environments across Germany, to also provide small and medium-sized companies access to new technologies. As one of the pioneers of the forward-looking project, Phoenix Contact alone contributes four examples to the online map.

The applications include the innovative project “Automation for versatile production technology” (AWaPro). The entire digital planning of the electrical installation of a machine or system for the manufacture of an customer-specific product is researched and developed in the context of the “it's OWL” leading-edge cluster. The result of the engineering process is the “digital article”. This also forms the basis of the “Smart Engineering and Production 4.0 (SEAP)” joint project between EPLAN, Phoenix Contact, and Rittal. SEAP 4.0 shows how a specific control cabinet can be economically created using unified and standardized data, data formats and interfaces for engineering tools.

Further Industrie 4.0 concepts are already in use in initial applications. A production control system designed by Phoenix Contact enables parallel production of different article variants, easy configuration of variant-specific procedures, and supports manual operations through convenient assistant functions. The entire production history is logged to ensure sustainable quality documentation. In tool making, automated mixed-process chains contribute to the reduction of waiting times because the tools are clearly identifiable and localizable at the individual parts level. The digitalization of all relevant data allows efficiency potentials to be harnessed and ultimately products can be manufactured in batch sizes of 1 at the same cost as a mass production.
